Yellow Iris: Queen of the garden porn stars

by Caroline Brown

Our yellow iris bloomed overnight, so far only 3 big blossoms but many more are at the ready.

For a while I was concerned that this was the invasive yellow flag iris (because everything else in our yard that the previous owners planted is an invasive.) But, I believe that yellow flag iris does not have a beard (the fuzzy thing that drapes down over the petal "falls") and this variety is clearly bearded.

  1. Your flowers look gorgeous!
I have a severe lack of a green thumb. Also a lack of space. I want to plant some herbs though. Are there any herbs that would do well in a So Cal apt complex. (on a balcony)??

Have a good last day of the weekend : )

  2. Hi Teddy, you can grow plenty of herbs if you have a sunny balcony! You’re lucky, in So. Cal probably you can grow herbs year round!

  3. Heh C…..Naughty flowers, naked cake…..what is blog-land coming to!!! Shame, shame, but pretty too LOL…..

  5. There are a lot of organic sprays & oils that are safe to use on food. You could try something called Bon Neem spray: http://www.gardeners.com/Bon-Neem-Spray/default/StandardCatalog.GardenPests_Insects.18486.cpd
    or Pyola http://www.gardensalive.com/product.asp?pn=8101
I’m not sure if you can get these at your local nursery or only mail order. Also your local nursery might be able to recommend a product that they have in stock. But from what I’ve heard these work pretty well!

  6. Thanks for the tips!

    🙂
