Worden Pond, Rhode Island

by Caroline Brown

This weekend’s volunteer and class activities took me to southern Rhode Island. I’ll blog more about my weekend adventures later, but for now here’s a photo of the windy shore of Worden Pond, the largest natural lake in the state. It’s part of the 3,350-acre Great Swamp Management Area.

It’s amazing to me how much the pond looked like the ocean–the wind was so high, it even had whitecaps.

Organic/natural sunscreens for gardeners & other sunlovers

by Caroline Brown

Sunscreen is (or should be) a really important to gardeners and other outdoors-people. A couple of bloggers and readers yakked about it this topic this week on this and other blogs, and it was so interesting that I thought I'd summarize for others. It started because Veggie Guy was wondering about organic and/or natural sunscreens since the season of spending a lot of time in the sun is upon us.

Scenes from a spring garden, mostly more red

by Caroline Brown

The bad news is, I dropped my digital camera and it's completely kaput. Finito. Mort. Muerto.

The good news is, Curt has one and he just gave me a lesson on how to use it. So, I get to keep on clickin' pics of my cool red tulips. Hopefully my flickr account won't explode.

Scenes from a spring garden, mostly red

by Caroline Brown

The tulips came out a couple of days ago and I couldn't be happier. Mostly because I planted the bulbs myself last fall, and it's so rewarding to see that the fruits of my labor are SO beautiful. There's about a dozen more tulips across the walk…but the camera's on the fritz. Hopefully I'll have more pics soon.

Briggs & Stratton & lawn mower smog

by Caroline Brown

An interesting article in today's New York Times discusses the efforts of a small engine manufacturer and their Congressional patron to keep from having to make changes to lawn mower engines that will decrease air pollution. This link allows you to read the article without registering–it's the same article reprinted in a Gainesville, Fla. newspaper.
